What Is Diabetes: Two Types

There are two types of diabetes, each just as problematic but focused on a unique situation that your body is experiencing. Type 1 Diabetes is a condition in which the body’s immune system attacks and then destroys the specific cells within the pancreas that are responsible for producing insulin. This leaves the person unable to produce any or enough insulin. This condition is deadly because your body requires insulin to open cells and to allow them to use the glucose in your body. Luckily, insulin can be brought in from outside sources such as medication to help your body to manage this problem. Type 1 Diabetes is only found in five percent of those that suffer from diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes is much more common. When you ask, what diabetes is, most people are referring to this condition. In this situation, the body starts out having the ability to use and produce insulin in the right manner. But, over time, the cells become unable to respond to the insulin. When this happens, the body can not get the nutrients it needs. Over time, the production of insulin also decreases. This type of diabetes is unlike Type 1 because it is caused by obesity and lifestyle choices rather than genetic makeup.

For those that suffer from either of these conditions, a serious and sometimes life threatening condition is in their hands. While there is treatment and medications that can offer help, the key change that matters is making lifestyle choices. For those that may be suffering from it, there is help available to allow them to overcome it. What is diabetes but a condition that is affecting millions of people around the world?
